DIY Freelance SciComm Business Course | 4 weeks, $150
I teach an online course twice a year (spring and fall) through the Association of Science Communicators focused on building a business as an independent, freelance science communicator.
During the four class sessions, we cover everything from networking, personal branding, and website design to navigating taxes, accounting, and contracts. We also have thoughtful discussions about what it takes to overcome insecurities, build confidence, and build a meaningful career as an independent science communicator.

*I believe firmly in access, and I am happy to offer discounted rates to students or anyone currently experiencing financial hardship.
Share expertise. Encourage others.
When I started my freelance career, I had no idea what I was doing.
Making the decision to quit my stable job and jump into the unpredictable world of freelancing was scary. I wanted to seek advice and guidance, but at the time, I didn’t know anyone who was doing this kind of work.
After five years of running my own business as a freelance science communicator, I have learned so much. During that time, I have received dozens of requests for information and insights about my career path. Some of the most commonly asked questions include:
How did you get into doing this type of work?
Should I go back to school to become a science communicator?
What kind of camera should I buy?
How do you manage taxes and insurance? Do you have an LLC?
Do you ever get scared?
It turns out a lot of people are interested in pursuing a career path similar to mine. To be as helpful (and efficient) as possible, I have created a formal mentorship program.
The folks I have mentored come from all sorts of backgrounds and phases of life — from college students to recent graduates to people with several years of professional experience.
Whether you’re looking to get into this field or you’re thinking about starting your own business, I will be happy to share my knowledge and advice. With just over a decade of science communication experience (half of which I’ve been a full-time freelancer) my expertise is derived from a vast spectrum of accomplishments, mistakes, adventures, and lessons.

“Marley has been immensely helpful in the launching of my freelance career. From discussions about gear and software to finding funding and developing projects, no topic is too big (or small). Marley is generous with her insight, time, and energy, and has a real interest in teaching and helping others. No matter your experience level, her wealth of knowledge will benefit those wanting to further their career in science communications.”

“As a mentor, Marley equips you with everything you need to succeed: practical tips, encouragement, personalized resources, answers to all kinds of questions, introductions to helpful contacts, and a sincere interest in your growth. She has given me the tools I need to pursue science communication and, more importantly, the confidence to use them. Plus, her warmth, openness about her personal experiences, and ongoing support make every session an absolute joy!"

“A month after meeting Marley, she introduced me to several marine scientists, all working in different fields and at different levels. In addition to helping me network, Marley showed me various avenues in marine science and assured me that there is no single, linear path in this field. She is truly a caring friend and mentor. I now run the Dive Department at an accredited AZA Aquarium, and I don’t think I would be in the position I am today without the guidance and assurance I received from Marley.”
— Shelby Miskell | Texas State Aquarium
“When I first reached out to Marley as an aspiring science communications freelancer, I didn't know if she would respond, much less give me her time. I never could have anticipated the level of attention, care, and guidance she would generously provide throughout the years that followed. She has helped me navigate the ins and outs of a confusing and sometimes intimidating career path, from the big picture questions of goals and milestones, to the logistics of equipment, insurance, and portfolios. Marley didn't just help me figure out the pathway into science communications; she has also empowered me to believe that I am capable and deserving to be on this path.”
